The National Service Scheme (NSS) is a Government of India initiative under the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports. It offers community service opportunities to students across various educational levels. Started in 1969 with 37 universities and 40,000 volunteers, NSS has now expanded to 657 universities and 51 +2 Councils/Directorates, encompassing 20,669 colleges/technical institutions and 11,988 senior secondary schools. The NSS aims to develop students' personality and character through voluntary community service, promoting "Education through Service."
